Course overview

Progress your career by completing this qualification to become a trade recognised fitter or turner. With greater demand in maintenance, repair and modifications, fitters and turners have opportunities in a range of industries.

This course will cover theoretical and practical aspects of the manufacture, repair and replacement of engineering components for a variety of machinery. You will design and manufacture modifications and gain skills in the maintenance of plant and equipment, shipping machinery and power stations. Our teachers will help you develop the ability to work effectively and safely using specialist tools and equipment.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to apply to become a qualified fitter and turner and take your career to the next stage.

Units

The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete all core units listed below, plus a combination of elective units with a total value of 73 points. Please note, elective units have various points values. Elective units will be selected in consultation with your employer and included on your training plan.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Courses may require different resources, depending on your study location;

  • Work clothing suited to the Engineering industry including steel cap boots, safety boots and protective clothing.
  • General writing materials will also need to be purchased.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Need to know

Replacement Qualification
This qualification has been replaced by MEM30219 - Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Fitting), as of 25 June 2019. Please note: TAFE Queensland has been given approval to extend the transition period until 31 December 2020, to enable current students to complete their study. If required, current enrolment will be transitioned into the replacement qualification.
