Course overview

Energize your fitness career with a dual qualification in sports and fitness. Sports coaches and fitness instructors are in high demand in Australia with up to 50,000 job openings expected over the next five years. This course will give you the advanced knowledge and practical skills you need to become a personal trainer (PT), coach, or sports development manager.

In this course you'll develop fundamental fitness skills including how to instruct personal training programs, group exercise classes, and exercise for older clients. You'll also learn advanced skills including coaching fundamentals and sports development principles. You'll graduate knowing how to plan and deliver coaching programs for high-performing athletes, as well as how to design, deliver and manage a range of community sport and recreation activities for the general public.

Successful completion of this course will prepare you to work in a range of fitness, sports coaching and sports development roles in a variety of settings.

Entry requirements

To be eligible to enrol into this program you must hold a current first aid and CPR certificate and have been recognised as competent through a recognised training program or recognition process against the following units of competency from the Certificate III in Fitness:

  • SISFFIT001 Provide health screening and fitness orientation
  • SISFFIT002 Recognise and apply exercise considerations for specific populations
  • SISFFIT003 Instruct fitness programs
  • SISFFIT004​ Incorporate anatomy and physiology principles into fitness programming
  • SISFFIT005​ Provide healthy eating information
  • SISFFIT006​ Conduct fitness appraisals
  • SISFFIT014​ Instruct exercise to older clients
  • SISXCCS001 Provide quality service

Placement

If you are not currently employed or volunteering in industry, during your course you will be required to complete vocational placement so you can start practising your new skills in a real-world environment. You’ll be required to work shifts determined by your placement provider, and these can include early mornings or late nights, any day of the week, including public holidays. TAFE Queensland may be able to assist in arranging suitable placements.

Completing placement is compulsory, and you will be expected to manage family and work commitments in order to complete your shifts. You are required to complete 40 hours of placement to satisfy this component of your qualification.
