The Trade Taster Program allows eligible high school students to try out a trade without needing to commit to a full qualification or apprenticeship. See if a trade is the right option for you, or test out a potential career path you're considering following in the future.

How it works

The Trade Taster Program delivers training to small groups of up to 14 students one day per week for nine weeks. Throughout the program, you'll get to try at least three different trade areas as well as having the opportunity to complete your Construction Industry White Card. The best part is that the program has been designed to fit around your other high school subjects, allowing you to get a head start on your career while maintaining your studies.

Available trades

You will be able to choose from a selection of trade areas including light automotive, engineering, electrical, plumbing, furnishing, motorcycle mechanics, carpentry, rail, flooring technology, heavy automotive, and occupational health and safety. During the program you will complete a number of individual competencies from various TAFE Queensland courses, giving you a taste for what a trades career would be like.

Outcome

It is important to note that successfully completing this program will not give you a formal qualification or any Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credits. However after completing the Trade Taster Program you may want to continue your training with a pre-apprenticeship course or school-based apprenticeship and get a head start on your trade qualifications while you're still at school.

What it costs

The Trade Taster Program is fully funded by the Queensland Government and is offered at no cost to eligible students. The cost of completing your White Card is also subsided under this program and will not incur a fee for eligible students. It is also important to note that this program does not use any of your VET in Schools (VETiS) funding entitlement.
