Given that major building and construction project activity has risen from the 2016-17 slump, one of our biggest challenges is ensuring our workforce has the right skills to meet new demand.

With the recent change in pace, the building and construction industry is seeing high demand for people with advanced technical skills. How much demand? In the next five years across Australia it’s predicted there will be job openings of over 50,000 for people with advanced building and construction skills.

TAFE Queensland is delivering Construction Skills Queensland supported training in a range of certificate IV and higher-level vocational training courses.

The initiative is called the Higher Level Skills program, and enrolments are currently open. It’s geared towards existing workers of the building and construction industry who want to further develop their skills and build their career. The best part about it? Thanks to funding from Construction Skills Queensland you won’t have to pay much at all.

As part of the program TAFE Queensland currently offers 11 different qualifications in Civil Construction and General Construction.

Mature-aged student, Jeffrey Daley has nothing but praise for the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) that he completed in 2017. Jeffrey, a qualified plasterer who runs his own plastering business, completed the diploma to upgrade his skills and expand his business.

“Once I had finished the diploma I was then able to submit my application for a medium-rise license which would give me the opportunity to build medium-rise structures."

“It also helped me to understand more of the management side of medium-rise structures."

Jeffrey said that one of the benefits of studying at TAFE Queensland was that he really enjoyed being able to learn from people who have worked in the industry and knew exactly what they were teaching.

If you’re looking to expand your skills, whether you’re a sole trader, or someone in the construction industry, the Higher Level Skills program could help.

TAFE Queensland is a proud recipient of CSQ funding for a range of courses under four programs – CSQ Short Courses, CSQ Trade Start, CSQ Skills Assessment and Gap Training and Higher Level Skills programs.

Check out the available courses online. But hurry, this funding round finishes on 30 September 2018.
